Nicholas King Nolte was born February 8, 1941 in Omaha Nebraska. He began his professional career on stage at the Pasadena Playhouse and regional theater. His breakthrough role was Rich Man, Poor Man in 1976. Nolte often plays unstable characters who are somewhat crazed and he is known for his cold and unsettling stare. His husky voice has won him many parts in major films.
Nolte modeled for the Eleanor Moore Agency in print ads and he turned down the role of Indiana Jones in Raiders of the Lost Ark in 1981. Nolte has acted in The Deep in 1977, 48 Hrs in 1982 and Another 48 Hrs in 1990, The Prince of Tides in 1991 and Cape Fear in 1991. He was The Good Thief in 2003 and a Warrior in 2011. He has been nominated for three Academy Awards.
In 1992 Nolte played in Lorenzo's Oil with Susan Sarandon, Mulholland Falls in 1996 and Afterglow in 1997. He received a second Academy Award nomination for his work in Affliction. Nolte worked into the 2000s by acting in small parts in Clean and Hotel Rwanda. He played supporting parts in Peaceful Warrior and Tropic Thunder in 2008. In 2014 Nolte can be seen in the blockbuster Noah.
Nolte has been married three times. Once to Sheila Page, once to Sharyn Haddad and once to Rebecca Liner. He has four children.
