Michael York-Johnson was born on March 27, 1942 in Buckinghamshire, UK. He performed on stage at an early age and also acted with the Oxford University Dramatic Society, the Laurence Olivier's International Theater Company and the Dundee Repertory. He worked with Franco Zeffirelli and his film debut was in the Taming of the Shrew (1967). York broke into film with Romeo and Juliet in 1968 (as Tybolt) and he portrayed Jolyon in the Forsyte Saga in 1967 (an award winning television movie).
York also acted in Cabaret in 1972, Murder on the Orient Express in 1974 and was D'Artagnan in many Musketeers movies. York starred in over 50 television movies, worked on stage and is an internationally renowned lecturer. York is known for his rich and deep voice and his co-authorship of A Shakesperean Actor Prepares. His autobiography released in 1993 was published as Accidentally on Purpose in the United States and Travelling Player in Great Britain.
York is the voice over for one of the apes in Spaceballs (1987). York turned down the lead in Love Story which would have made him well over 10 million dollars at 1970s rates. Michael York has been married to Patricia McCallum since 1968.
