Georgios Kyriacos Panayiotou born on June 25, 1963 changed his name to George Michael to reflect his career as a singer and songwriter, musician and record producer. He was a superstar during the 1980s and 1990s with his post-disco dance pop. He might also be known as a soul singer though his material is more in line with pop than soul. He joined the pop group Wham and they were a success with Careless Whisper and a Different Corner.
Michael is a world bestselling artist and has sold more than 100 million singles around the world. Billboard magazine ranked Michael as number 40th on the most successful artists list in 2008. He has won three Brit music Awards, four MTV Video Music Awards and three American Music Awards. In eight nominations, he has won two Grammy Awards. He relished in the fact that his songs were the most played song on British radio between 1984 and 2004. His documentary A Different Story was released in 2005 and listed his professional career as well as his personal life.
His solo career began in 1987 with an Aretha Franklin duet "I Knew Your were Waiting". In 1987 Michael released his solo album Faith. He played a large number of instruments on the album and wrote every track on the recording. His single I Want Your Sex was banned from US and UK radio stations for sexually suggestive lyrics. It was featured on the soundtrack from Beverly Hills Cop II and did become #2 on the US Billboard Hot 100 singles chart.
Michael and Wham are famous for Wake Me Up before You Go Go, Freedom and I'm your Man (1985). He has sung duets with Aretha Franklin, Elton John, Mary J. Blige and Whitney Houston.
Michael is well known for his arrest in a public restroom in California for committing a lewd act. He made a song mocking that incident. Michael became explicit about his homosexuality and his relationship with his partner Kenny Goss. He also stated that he randomly looks for anonymous sex and this in no way affects his music.
