Born on December 24, 1971 Puerto Rican actor, author and musician Enrique Martin Morales (Ricky Martin) started his career at 12 with the group Menudo. He sang with Menudo for five years and also released Spanish-language solo albums. He was a Mexican television actor and acted on stage. He starred in the TV soap opera General Hospital in 1994.
In 1999 at the 41st Grammy Awards, Martin sang The Cup of Life. This brought Latino pop to the attention of the U.S. music scene. He announced Livin' la Vida Loca giving him worldwide success and starting the popularity of Latin pop music. He released Ricky Martin (an album) selling over 22 million copies. Martin released record albums Me Amaras in 1993, A Medio Vivir in 1995, Musica+Alma+Sexo in 2011.
Martin has received two American Music Awards, six Grammies, eight World Music Awards and eight MTV Music Video Awards. He has performed in more than 60 countries globally and sold over 70 million albums.
In 1994 Martin moved to Los Angeles and acted in Getting By, General Hospital and started a romantic relationship with a man. Martin released his first English language album called Life which he also co-wrote. His single from the album I Don't Care reached number three on the Hot Dance Club Songs and sixty-five on the Billboard Hot 100.
Martin's autobiography Me was released in 2010 and was listed on the New York Times Best Seller list. He released The Best Thing About Me is You in 2010 which was a hit. Martin published 17: Greatest Hits in 2011 in the UK. He played Che on Broadway in Evita in 2012 and was a Spanish teacher on the Fox TV show Glee in 2012.
2013 saw Martin as a coach on The Voice Australia and releasing Greatest Hits: Souvenir Edition in Australia. He has also written Santiago the Dreamer in Land Among the Stars and a Spanish edition of this children's book. He is the founder of a non-profit organization sponsoring summer camps and works through the Sabera Foundation to rescue orphan girls from the street of Kolkata. He campaigns against child trafficking.
