Born on November 26, 1939, Tina Turner was originally named Anna Mae Bullock. She is known as the Queen of Rock n Roll and after fifty years in the entertainment business, Tina is one of the most successful international female rock stars. Her powerful and sultry voice plus her life story as well as her beauty has made her a legend.
Tina was born to a sharecropping family in Nutbush Tennessee but was abandoned by her parents. She was raised by her grandmother, and eventually moved to St. Louis to live with her mother. She began listening and partying in R&B nightclubs and at 16 was invited to sing onstage with Ike Turner and his Kings of Rhythm. Tina was a natural at singing and performing and she was soon a part of the group. Her first vocal, A Fool in Love impressed Ike Turner and he changed her name from Anna to Tina Turner.
During the 1960s and 70s Tina was a relative unknown in the US, but her European superstar status never wavered. The Ike and Tina Turner Revue were highly energized and their success was due to Tina's talent. Ike was a wife beater, drug addict and miserable man. "Proud Mary" was a hit, but Tina was blamed for the Revue's failures. In 1976 Tina left her marriage with .36 cents and a Mobil gasoline credit card in her pocket.
Tina fought hard to become a household name and her first #1 single "What's Love Got to do with It?" made her an international star. She received nominations in the rock, R&B and pop categories and received four trophies (1985). She starred in Mad Max Beyond Thunderdome (1985) duets with David Bowie, Mick Jagger and a bestselling autobiography, "I, Tina".
In 2005 Tina received the Kennedy Center Honors for recognition of her contributions to the arts. She no longer does live concerts, but continues to sing and record. She is best known for her legs, lips and hairs as well as her powerful voice. Tina is currently married to Erwin Bach and has one child.
