The Tasmanian Devil, Rolly and Flynny are nicknames given to Errol Leslie Thomson Flynn born on June 20, 1909 in Tasmania Australia. He was an energetic child who always found himself in trouble. He was thrown out of every school he started and in his teens he left school for good. He set out to find gold but took jobs as a police constable, sanitation engineer, sheep castrator and fisherman. He ran to England and took up acting.
He was cast In the Wake of the Bounty in 1933 and his good looks and athletic talent took him to America. He was in the title role of Captain Blood in 1935 and was the king of swashbuckler films. His off screen passions of fighting, boating, sex and drinking made him a bit difficult to work with. He loved the ladies and had three statutory rape trials.
As his good looks declined his career fell. He had trouble with lawsuits and the IRS. He had little money left later in life and he passed away almost penniless on October 14, 1959 in Vancouver Canada.
Flynn was married to Lili Damita from 1936 until 1942 when they divorced with one child. Nora Eddington was his second wife from 1944 until 1948. They had two children. His third wife was Patrice Wymore from 1950 until his death in 1959. They had one child. Flynn was one of the greatest swashbucklers in film and he always had a moustache.
His autobiography My Wicked Ways lists out all his affairs and lawsuits. When he was banned from drinking on set he would inject oranges with vodka. Eating them on lunch breaks served him well. He has been chosen by Empire Magazine as one of the 100 Sexiest Stars in film history.
Flynn and Olivia de Hailland starred together in nine movies including The Adventures of Robin Hood in 1938, The Charge of the Light Brigade in 1936 and They Died with Their Boots on in 1941.
