Elizabeth Alexandra Mary was born April 21, 1926 and is the constitutional monarch of sixteen autonomous states. The queen is directly over the 53 member Commonwealth of Nations. She is also titled the Supreme Governor of the Church of England. She has reigned and traveled more than any monarch in recent history.
Elizabeth was educated privately at home and became heir presumptive upon her father George VI assentation to the throne. During WWII Elizabeth undertook public duties that included the Auxiliary Territorial Service. Elizabeth married Prince Philip of Greece and Denmark in 1947. Their engagement was somewhat controversial due to his foreign birth and lack of fortune. They have four children: Charles, Anne Andrew, and Edward. Elizabeth was crowned queen in 1953. It was the first televised coronation.
Elizabeth has seen the transformation of the British Empire and the Commonwealth of Nations during her reign. Elizabeth has reigned over the troubles that continue in Northern Ireland, The Falklands War and wars with Iraq and Afghanistan. Elizabeth has seen her commitment to the United States questioned as well as her loyalty to France. She has lived through the death of her father at 56 as well as the assassination of Prince Phil's uncle Lord Mountbatten. Her children have had marital troubles that have contributed to Elizabeth's sorrows as well as the death of her daughter in law Princess Diana in 1997. Her person popularity as the reigning monarch remains high in spite of her unruly family.
Elizabeth II formally approves all government legislation, changes and bills. This is done on the advice of the current Prime Minister. If Elizabeth disapproved of legislation, it would indeed cause a rift in the government.
