Peter Johann Weissmuller or Big John was born June 2, 1904 in Romania but he often claimed he was born in Windber Pennsylvania. He began swimming on the advice of his doctor and he eventually grew to be 6"3" and 190 pounds. He was the undefeated winner of five Olympic gold swimming medals plus 67 world and 52 national titles and every freestyle swimming record from the half-mile to the 100 yard dash.
Weissmuller appeared in Glorifying the American Girl in 1929 as Adonis in a fig leaf. This jungle movie was a huge success and in 1932 Weissmuller played in Tarzan the Ape Man. Weissmuller was reputed to be the only man who could act without clothes. Weissmuller was told to divorce his wife to enhance his appeal to the women. He make an additional six Tarzan movies and 16 Jungle Jim (1948) programs. Tired of being a jungle king, Weissmuller retired to Fort Lauderdale, Florida.
In 1983 Weissmuller was inducted into the Olympic Hall of fame as a charter member. Weissmuller had six wives. Camilla Louiee, Bobbe Arnst in 1931 to 1933, Lupe Velex from 1933 to 1939, Beryl Scott from August 1939 to January 1948 (3 children), Ailene Gates from January 1948 to 1962 and Maria Brock Mandell Bauman from 1963 until Weissmuller's death from stoke on January 20, 1984.
