Prince Robert Nelson born in Minneapolis, Minnesota on June 7, 1958 to jazz singer, Mattie Shaw and a lyricist and pianist, John L. Nelson. Prince frequently ran away from home after his parents divorced and was eventually adopted by the Andersons. He and Cymone Anderson plus Charles Smith joined a band named Grand Central and then Champagne. They were fairly successful, but did not last long.
At 18 Prince worked on demo tracks and eventually signed a recording contract with Warne Brothers. He made his first album in 1978 and entitled it For You. It wasn't strong, but it was a start. His singles Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad and I Wanna Be Your Lover in 1979 introduced Prince's love for sexually explicit materials. His album Purple Rain in 1984 set him up for fame. He released Little Red Corvette and Delirious in 1999 which featured his band, The Revolution.
His songs contained high sexual content and spurred a censorship organization. He continued to release songs with the same subjects and these include Around the World in a Day, Parade, Love Sexy, and Batman. His sequel to Purple Rain was released in 1990 and called Graffiti Ridge. Prince started a new band called The New Power Generation and released Diamond and Pearls, Cream and Gett Off (1991). Prince altered his stage name to a character and then changed it back.
Prince writes, produces and composes all his own music. He play any of the instruments himself on his albums and does use a band for concerts. He has written songs for Chaka Khan, Sinead O'Connor and Jordan Knight. He had a hip replacement in 2005 due to his gyrations on stage. Prince has also been inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame as well as ranked #5 on VH1s 100 Sexiest Artists. He has sold over 80 million alums worldwide.
Prince married Mayte Garcia in 1996 and the marriage was annulled in 1999. They had one child. He married Manuela Testolini in 2001 and they divorced in 2006.
