Jane Alice Peters aka Carole Lombard was born on October 6, 1908 in Fort Wayne, Indiana. When Carole was only 12 she was signed to a one-picture contract. The film was A Perfect Crime in 1921. Carol would not been seen again for four years.
At the age of 15 she joined a theater troupe and played in stage shows. In 1925 she passed screen test and was signed with Fox Films. Her first role was Hearts and Spurs in 1925 and then in Durand of the Bad Lands. She was the lead in Marriage in Transit. In 1926 Carole was in a car accident that left her face scarred. Fox canceled her contract. She continued to find work in shorts during 1928 and filmed Me, Gangster in 1928. Carole's light sexy voice enabled her to transition from silent films to sound. Her first sound film was High Voltage in 1929 and 1931 she played with William Powell in Man of the World. In 1932 Carole played opposite Clark Gable. In 1936 Carole received an Oscar nomination for My Man Godfrey. In 1941 Carole Made Mr. & Mrs. Smith and her last film was in 1942 in To Be or Not to Be. Carole went home to Indiana for a war bond rally in 1942. The plane she was riding went down outside Las Vegas and all aboard were killed. Carole died at the age of 33 on January 16, 1942. She was posthumously awarded the Medal of Freedom as the first woman killed in the line of duty in WWII.
Carole was married to William Powell from June 1931 to August 1933 when they divorced. She married Clark Gable in March of 1939 and they stayed married until her death in 1942.
