Born on October 15, 1920 in Rodosto, Turkey, Achod Malakianaka aka Henri Verneuil is a writer and director. He is best known for the movies The Sicilian Clan in 1969, I as in Icarus in 1979 and The Night Caller in 1975. He is also known for his popular thrillers and action films that often star Jean Gabin. He has been designated for Oscar and the Palme d'Or awards and received the Locarno International Film Festival and Edgar Allan Poe Awards. He is also the recipient of the French Legion of Honor and a Golden Globe Award.
He made over forty films during his career and was often called the most American of French directors. He was awarded a Cesar in 1996 and elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in the year 2000.He was married to Francoise Bonnot and had three children. Verneuil died in Bagnolet on January 11, 2002 at 6the age of 81.
