Born on January 30, 1992 in Hyde Park, New York the 32nd U.S. president Franklin D. Roosevelt was the only president to be elected four times. Helped the U.S. through the Great Depression and WWII and expanded the power of the federal government through reforms known as the New Deal.
In 1910 Roosevelt was asked to run for the New York state senate. He ran as a Democrat and won the election. He was reelected in 1912 and was chair of the agricultural committee. Roosevelt supported Woodrow Wilson at the 1912 Democratic Convention and after Wilson's win Roosevelt was appointed as Assistant Secretary of the Navy. Roosevelt was an energetic and efficient administration with his specialized in business operations. He worked with Congress to get budgets approved and systems modernized. He founded the U.S. Naval Reserve.
In 1914 Roosevelt ran for the U.S. Senate but lost. He began to integrate himself in Washington politics and was often seen at the most prominent events. In 1914 he had an affair with Lucy Mercer. Eleanor issued an ultimatum and Roosevelt kept his affair a hidden secret.
Roosevelt was James M. Cox' presidential running mate, but they were defeated by Warren G. Harding. Roosevelt was diagnosed with polio and became permanently paralyzed during this time. He worked on walking with braces and continued his political dreams. In 1928 Roosevelt was elected governor of New York and by 1932 he was elected president. During his presidency he ordered temporary closure on all banks, he formed a Brian Trust of economic advisors who designed the AAA, CCC and NRA. By 1936 the economy improved by 34% but Roosevelt was criticized for trying to implement socialism. In 1941 Roosevelt pushed to have the U.S. become allies with Britain and France against German and Italy and Japan. The U.S. entered WWII on December 7, 1941. Roosevelt developed a series of strategies for defeating Germany in Europe and promoted the United Nations formation.
In 1945 Roosevelt attended the Yalta Conference to discuss post-war reorganization but on April 12, 1945 Roosevelt suffered a cerebral hemorrhage and died. He was married to Eleanor Roosevelt from 1905 to 1945.
