Liv Johanne Ullmann or the Norwegian Angel was born on December 16, 1938 in Tokyo Japan. She became successful when she worked with director Ingmar Bergman in Persona (1966), The Passion of Anna in 1969 and Face to Face in 1976. She also played in The Abdication in 1974 and Dangerous Moves (1984).
Ullmann is a very serious actress and plays introspective and serious characters. She has a willowy and very earthy beauty that transcends time. Ullmann picks and choses her parts and will turn down parts that include extreme violence.
Ullmann has one daughter with director Ingmar Bergman. Together Bergman and Ullmann made 10 movies. These include Hour of the Wolf (1968), Saraband (2003) and The Serpent's Egg in 1977). She was married to Donald Saunders and Gappe Stang both of whom she divorced.
In 2001 Ullmann was appointed as president for the Festival International de Cannes and is current on the jury. She was nominated for a Tony Award in 1975 (A Doll's House) and in 1977 for Anna Christie.
