Joseph Dassin was born in New York City on November 7, 1938. He is best known for his supporting roles in The Law (1959) and Topkapi (1964). Those in France and Canada know Joseph Dassin as a pop singer "Joe Dassin." In 1968 he recorded "Bip-Bip" and continued recording highly popular songs until his death.
Dassin lived in Los Angeles for part of his childhood, but after his father was accused by Senator Joseph McCarthy of being a Communist, he and his family moved to Europe. Dassin studied at Institute Le Rosey in Switzerland but moved back to the US to attend college in Ann Arbor Michigan. After graduating, Dassin moved back to France where he gained huge success with his music.
Dassin is the stepson of Melina Mercouri and was married and divorced to Christine Delvaux (2 children) and Maryse Massiera. He died of a drug induced heart attack on August 20, 1980. He is interred in Hollywood, California.
