Born on October 25, 1931 Annie Girardot is a French actress who has won the Cesar Award three times. She generally plays independent and strong willed but lonely women and brings an earthiness to her characters. Annie has starred in 150 films and is a recipient of several international prizes. She won the Volpi Cup for Best Actress in 1965 at the Venice Film Festival for Three Rooms in Manhattan.
Annie began her film career in 1955 with Treize a Table but theater was her main performance station. She played in La Machine a ecrire in 1956. During the 1960s Annie was a box office magnet in France. She played in Vice and Virtue in 1963, Live for Life in 1967 and Love is a Funny Thing in 1969. Her biggest box office hit in France is Death of Love in 1970.
She symbolized the 1970s feminist movement in France. She claimed her draw was being a woman rather than a vamp-like creature. Annie battled depression in the 1980s and she won another Cesar Award for her portrayal in Les Miserables. In 1992 she was awarded the Cesar for her role in The Piano Teacher. She played in Cache in 2005. She triumphed on the stage with Madame Marguerite and was awarded the Moliere Award.
Annie Girardot married Renato Salvatori in 1962. They have a daughter Giulia. They separated but never divorced. Annie died on February 28, 2011 at the age of 79. She was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease and became the symbol for Alzheimer's prevention studies.
