Neil Percival Young born on November 12, 1945 in Canada is a songwriter, musician and singer. He started his career performing with Shadows instrumentals in 1960. He left for California in 1966 where he started Buffalo Springfield. He joined Crosby, Stills & Nash in 1969. The group won 1969's best new artist Grammy award and performed at the Woodstock Festival. Their first album release D?j? vu was highly successful but the band had continual disagreements.
Young has a successful solo career starting with his first album in 1968. He was inducted in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 and then again in 1997 with Buffalo Springfield. He recorded as a solo artist After the Gold Rush in 1970 which featured Everybody Knows This is Nowhere, Don't Let it Bring you Down and Tell Me Why. He also recorded Only Love Can Break Your Heart and When You Dance.
He uses his distinctive guitar work and personal lyrics as well as his signature alto and high tenor singing voice. He accompanies himself on many different instrument but his electric and clawhammner acoustical guitar are his defining characteristics. Young has tried different music styles including swing and electronic, but his best work falls into folk and country rock and amplified hard rock.
Young directed Journey Through the Park in 1973, Rust Never Sleeps in 1979, and Greendale in 2003. He is a highly outspoken advocate for small farmers and cofounded the benefit concert Farm Aid in 1985. He has also founded the Bridge School which helps children with verbal and physical disabilities. He is married to Pegi Morton currently. He has three children who were diagnosed with cerebral palsy and a daughter who has epilepsy. He lives on a ranch in La Honda, California and has retained his Canadian citizenship.
During the 2000s Young continued to write and sing music. He released Silver & Gold and Road Rock Vol. 1 in 2000. He released Greendale in 2003 and in 2005 he released Prairie Wind. While working on this album Young was diagnosed with a brain aneurysm. Subsequent bleeding and illness forced Young to cancel his schedule but he was back on stage in two months.
In 2012 Young with Crazy Horse released Americana, and in 2012 they released Psychedelic Pill. Young's autobiography Waging Heavy Peace: A Hippie Dream was released in 2012. He is about to release Pono in 2014 which is a high resolution digital music download. It is designed to compete against MP3 players.
