Sandra was born on April 23, 1942 in Bayonne, New Jersey. She was popular in teen films in the 1950s and 1960s. By the end of the 1960s however her career faltered and her marriage to Bobby Darin ended in a divorce (1967). Her birth name was Alexandra Zuck and she was a successful model by the age of 12. She was 14 when Sandra filmed Until: They Sail (1957). She became a box office hit with beach movies (Gidget) and A Summer Place.
In 1960 Dee filmed Come September with Bobby Darin and they married that same year. Dee was one of Hollywood's top stars from 1960 through 1963 and in 1961 she played the role of Tammy in the popular Tammy films. Dee filmed only six more films, divorced Bobby Darin in 1967 and her career essentially stopped. In the 1970s and early 80s Sandra Dee appeared in one film, The Dunwich Horror and starred in made for television movies. She acted in several television series including Night Gallery, Fantasy Island and Love, American Style. In 1983 Dee appeared in her last film Lost.
Dee had one child with Bobby Darin and in her biography written by her son, her life of anorexia, drug and alcohol problems and sexual abuse were outlined. Sandra Dee died from kidney disease in February of 2005 in California.
