Henry Fonda

Henry Jayne Fonda was born on May 16, 1905 in Grand Island, Nebraska. His movie career spanned the 1940s through the 70s and he is one of America's most popular and loved movie stars. He worked with John Ford in Young Mr. Lincoln in 1939, The Grapes of Wrath in 1940 and My Darling Clementine in 1946. Fonda served in WWII which shaped some of his iconic roles.
Fonda's other works include Mister Roberts in 1955 and Twelve Angry Men in 1957. He won an Oscar for On Golden Pond in 1989. Fonda was a Life Scout and served as a scout master as an adult. He is the father of Jane and Peter Fonda (actors). Although Fonda was a kind and heroic person on screen, he was described as cold, aloof and angry when off screen.
Fonda won a Tony Award in 1948 for his enactment of Mister Roberts and he won another Tony in 1979 for Clarence Darrow. Fonda was named Father of the Year in 1963 by the Father's Day/Mother's Day Council.
Films by Fonda include Yours, Mine and Ours in 1968, In Harms' Way in 1965 and The Ox-Bow Incident in 1943. He also filmed Jezebel in 1938 with Bette Davis. He also acted in The Longest Day in 1962, Battle of the Bulge in 1965 and Midway in 1979.
He was married to Margaret Sullavan from 1931 to 1933, Frances Seymour Brokaw from 1936 until her death in 1950 (2 children), Susan Blanchard from 1950 until 1956 (1 child), Afdera Franchetti from 1957 to 1961, and Shirlee Fonda from 1965 until his death on August 12, 1982.
