Born on May 14, 1944 on Modesto, California, George Walton Lucas Jr. was mentored by Francis Ford Coppola. They formed American Zoetrope in 1969 and Lucas' first project was THX 1138 in 1971. In 1973 Lucas formed his own company Lucasfilm Ltd and wrote and directed American Graffiti in 1973. This movie won the Golden Globe and five Academy Award nominations. His next project was Star Wars: Episode IV ?€“ A New Hope in 1977.
Lucas established I.L.M. (Industrial Light and Magic) to produce visual effects need for his Star Wars movies. Lucas had very little luck marketing Star Wars and finally 20th Century Fox agreed to give Lucas 40% of the film's box office takes in lieu of a salary. The movie broke all box office records and earned seven Academy Awards. In addition to the Star Wars franchise, Lucas made the Indiana Jones series with Steven Spielberg.
In 1985 Lucas change movie theaters sound with his T.H.X. System. He build Skywalker Ranch to accommodate his creative, technical and administrative needs and he went on to make more movies needing major innovations in film-making. He was awarded the Irving G. Thalberg Award by the Board of Governors of the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences for his life-time achievement and technological developments.
In October 2012 Lucas sold the Star Wars rights, LucasFilm and Industrial Light & Magic to Walt Disney Co. for $4.50 billion. Most of the proceeds went to Charity. Lucas was married to Marcia Lucas form 1969 until 1983. They divorced and had one child. In 2013 he married Mellody Hobson and they have one child.
