Jet Li's birth name is Li Lian Jie and he was born April 26, 1963 in Beijing China. He was a Wushu or martial artist national champion many times over but changed his career to acting and directing. His first directing debut Born to Defense in 1986 was a failure but it provided the audience with authentic fight scenes.
He trained at the Beijing wushu academy at the age of eight. He received five gold medals in Chinese martial art championships. In his teens Li became a national coach and before he was 20 he began starring in movies. He was the biggest movie star of the early 1990s in Hong Kong.
Li was originally cast as Li Mu Bai in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon in 2000 but turned it down. This was due to a promise made to his wife Nina Li Chi. Li went ton to promote Kiss of the Dragon in 2001. In Rise to Honor in 2003 he did voice overs and provided fight scenes.
He claimed that his martial arts film Fearless in 2006 was his last period kung-fu movie. He is now concentrating on documentaries about Buddhism. In his fight scenes in Romeo Must Die (2000), Li sustained bruised ribs while performing. In 2008 he played the First Emperor of China in The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor.
