Born on July 20, 1925, under the sign of Cancer and in the year of the Wood Ox Jacques Lucien Jean Delors distinguished himself as a French economist and politician. He was the governing head (1975) of the committee to bring about integration in economy for Europe. In English speaking countries this alliance is known as the European Community. Delors greatest accomplishments include implementing budgetary reforms and starting the groundwork for a single market European community.
In 1974 Delors and other left-wing Christians joined the French Socialist party. He served in the European Parliament from 1979 to 1981 and became chairman of the Committee on Economic and Monetary Affairs. President Francois Mitterrand selected Delors as Economics and Finance Minister and Budget Minister for France and the European community.
Delors had a high interest in education and initiated a French law in 1971 requiring companies to place part of their profits into educational banks for their employees. He also worked on a UNESCO Commission on Education for the Twenty-first Century (Learning: the Treasure Within) and the final report continues to be a very significant influence on lifelong learning.
Delors also founded a left-wing think tank called Notre Europe. This is a Paris France based group, and Delors is very active as one of the presidents of this group. Delors is also a member of the Club of Madrid a non-profit organization whose members include 81 democratic former Prime Ministers and Presidents from 57 different countries. Jacques Delors was the first person to be honored with the Leonardo European Corporate Learning Award in 2010. Currently Delors lives in France and his son, Martine Aubry, a member of the Socialist Party.
