Born August 15, 1945 in France, Alain Marie Juppe served in the office of President of Union for a Popular Movement from 2002-2004. He was Minister of Foreign Affairs from 2011 to 2012 and served as Prime Minister from 1995 to 1997 under Jacques Chirac. He was Minister of Defense and Veterans Affairs from 2010 to 2011. He also served as minister for Foreign Affairs from 1993 to 1995 and was Minister of the Budget and Spokesman for the Government from 1986 to 1988.
Juppe was condemned for mishandling public funds in 2004 and his political profession was put on hold. After two years he was nominated as Mayor of Bordeaux in 2006. In 2007 Juppe served as Minister of State for Ecology and Sustainable Development. He is still the Mayor of Bordeaux despite losing in the 2007 legislative elections.
His plan for Welfare State reform caused huge social conflicts in 1995 and he abandoned this reform. He was the most unpopular Prime minister of the Fifth Republic. Juppe campaigned for unification of all parties behind Chirac. This allotted him the distinction of being the founder of the Union for the Presidential Majority which became the Union for a Popular Movement. Juppe continued to cause criticism when he was named in a Rwandan government report on French genocide in Rwanda. He criticized Pope Benedict XVI over condom comments. Juppe was awarded the Mesrob Mashdots Medal (Armenian). Juppe advocates for the creation of a European federation to respond to the economic crises in Europe.
Juppe was married to Christine Leblond from 1965 to 1993. He then married Isabelle Legrand-Bodin in 1993 ant hey are still married. His children are Laurent, Marion and Clara.
