Ryan was born September 10, 1974 and spent his childhood in New Castle, Delaware. His acting career began on the soap opera One life to Live in 1968. He played television first gay teenager. Ryan made other television appearances and began making movies in 1995 with Crimson Tide, Nowhere (1997), White Squall (1996) and I Know What You Did Last Sumer in 1997.
Ryan was considered for a role opposite Mel Gibson in The Patriot (2000) but lost to Heath Ledger. He holds a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and runs a production company Lucid Films with several other actors and directors.
Phillippe acted in several films during the 2000s including Gosford Park (2001) which was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Picture, Crash (2005 academy award winner best film) and 2006's Flags of Our Fathers. Currently Phillippe directs and his first attempt is Shreveport (2013). He plays a fading film actor who is kidnapped and tortured. Phillippe also helped write the screenplay.
Phillippe married Reese Witherspoon on June 5, 1999 in Charleston South Carolina. The two had originally met at Reese's 21st birthday party. On June 13, 2008 the couple divorced citing irreconcilable differences. They had two children and Phillippe has another child from a different relationship.
